Couples Therapy

Relationships are tender and complex, none of us are spared their challenges. We're shaped by our early relationships, just as in adulthood we have the opportunity to shape them. We come into partnership carrying blueprints from the relationships that raised us, which is why relationship becomes a mirror we can't fully step outside of, and if we let it, an invitation to heal whatever in us is still asking to be met and alchemized.

I work experientially, helping couples see the patterns of disconnection, self-protection, fear, and conflict that arise between them, and how to do something different. This means working with the whole system: physiological, cognitive, somatic, emotional, and spiritual.

I draw on Emotionally Focused Therapy, the Gottman Method, The developmental model, Internal Family Systems, and Somatic Experiencing.

We work state dependently. That means practicing new responses while your nervous system is actually activated, because that's where real capacity gets built.

I work with relationships of all kinds and configurations, queer and non-monogamous constellations among them.

We meet weekly for sixty to seventy-five minutes. For couples who want more room to work, I also offer couples intensives, a longer, more concentrated container for going deep in a short amount of time. Learn more about intensives →

Early sessions are about understanding the specific shape your disconnection takes, and what sets it off. From there, we build the skill of catching the cycle earlier, and responding differently once you're in it, until that capacity belongs to you and not to the room. My job is to work myself out of a job.

If you're ready to stop having the same fight, find your way back to each other, and let this relationship expand in the ways it's capable of, let's talk.

  • “I can't speak highly enough about Lucy Sunday. Her authentic warmth and curiosity invite such a safe space for inquiry and vulnerability and she is masterful at bringing clarity to the often messy and confusing experience of relational work. She is compassionate, unafraid of nuance, and respectful of differing perspectives and perceptions. Her wisdom and insight have been indispensable to me at critical times and I'm so grateful to have her support and guidance."

  • “It was by good fortune that Lucy Sunday was our counselor. From the first interaction she was in our corner. Lucy created a safe, supportive space & much encouragement & guidance as we worked to strengthen our relationship. Her humor, compassion, and patience augmented her talents at reframing statements, distilling our rambles to concise sentences, and kindly pointing out the hard truths. We feel so very lucky to have had Lucy as our therapist on this journey; she's excellent.”

  • “My wife and I started seeing Lucy when we were really stuck, after trying another couples therapist without much luck. From the start, she created a space where we both felt heard and appropriately challenged. She’s thoughtful, clear, and even funny, and brings real depth without making things feel heavy or overly clinical. With her help, we’ve grown a lot and feel more connected than we have in years. Really grateful we found her.”
