Discernment Counseling
Discernment counseling is a short-term, structured process for couples who aren't sure the relationship should continue. Sometimes one partner is leaning toward leaving while the other wants to fight for the relationship. Sometimes both partners are stuck in the same unanswered question.
This isn't couples therapy. We're not trying to fix anything yet. The goal is clarity: understanding the relationship well enough to know which path is actually yours.
When It Makes Sense
This may be the right fit if:
One partner is considering leaving and the other wants to repair
You've reached an impasse that isn't moving
Past therapy led to more conflict or distance, not more clarity
Every conversation circles the same ground without landing anywhere
Often, couples therapy isn't possible yet, not because the relationship can't be helped, but because one partner is too ambivalent to commit to the work. You can't do repair work in good faith when you're not sure you want to repair. Discernment counseling exists for that gap.
How It Works
Typically one to five sessions. We focus on understanding, not fixing: how did you get here, and how did you both contribute to getting the relationship to where it is? Sessions include time together and time one-on-one with each partner, with the intent of gaining an honest picture of what's been happening and each person's part in it.
Three Paths Forward
Status Quo, with the awareness of your choice to stay where you are
Commit to couples therapy, for 6 months with real intention to repair
Move toward separation or divorce, with clarity and confidence
The aim isn't to fix the relationship here. It's to reach a decision you can actually stand behind.
